Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has ventured off a Texas Army base several times in the past month as part of an effort to rehabilitate him, a military spokesperson said.
According to military spokeswoman Arwen Consaul, Bergdahl has visited a library, supermarket and several other stores since he returned to the U.S. mid-June. He has also eaten at restaurants and interacted with the public.
The process is aimed at “getting (Bergdahl) comfortable with being out in public and interacting with large groups of people,” she said.
Each time he leaves base, Bergdahl — who was freed late last May through a controversial prisoner exchange — is accompanied by members of his reintegration team.
“Sometimes they sit at the table with him,” the Army spokeswoman said, according to CNN. “[O]ther times, they hang in the background.”
Bergdahl has dressed in both civilian clothing and his military uniform during his excursions off the base, CNN reported.
Meanwhile, the Army continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Bergdahl’s disappearance and capture by the Taliban. It is also unknown whether he has visited his family since his return to the U.S.
